    Frequently asked questions

    How do you calculate crypto futures PnL?

    On a linear USDT-margined contract, long gross PnL = (exit − entry) × quantity and short gross PnL = (entry − exit) × quantity. Quantity is in the base asset (for example BTC).

    This calculator then subtracts estimated taker fees on entry and exit notional and shows initial margin as entry notional ÷ leverage, plus ROI on that margin.

    Does leverage change futures profit and loss?

    For a fixed quantity, absolute PnL does not magically scale with leverage — price change × size still drives the cash PnL. Leverage mainly changes how much initial margin you post and therefore ROI on margin.

    Higher leverage does increase liquidation risk because the same adverse move consumes a larger share of a smaller margin buffer.

    What fee rate should I enter for futures?

    Use your exchange taker fee if you expect market orders, or maker fee if you expect limit fills. Enter the per-side rate as a human percent (for example 0.04 for 0.04%).

    VIP tiers and promotional discounts differ by venue, so manual input keeps the estimate honest.

    Does this futures calculator include funding?

    No. Funding, slippage, partial fills, and liquidation are omitted so the closed-trade PnL stays easy to audit. Use the funding calculator for holding-cost estimates and the liquidation calculator for downside price bounds.

    Initial margin vs notional — what is the difference?

    Notional is the position’s cash exposure at entry (entry price × quantity). Initial margin is the collateral posted to open that notional under your leverage: notional ÷ leverage on this linear model.

    ROI on margin divides net PnL by that initial margin, which is why the same trade looks “higher ROI” at higher leverage even when cash PnL is unchanged.

    Is this the same as a Binance or Bybit PnL screen?

    It follows the common linear perpetual PnL shape used in public exchange docs, but it is not a live replica of any venue’s matching or fee engine.

    Confirm fills, fees, and realized PnL in your exchange history before relying on a number for accounting.
